This was the 50th running of the Fastnet Race. Race conditions were quite windy for the Solent start, but fortunately there were no incidents prior to departing the Solent at the Needles, Unfortunately at that juncture a Jenneau Sun Fast 33 double handed yacht struck an unknown object and subsequently sunk. Both crew were promptly rescued by the Yarmouth RNLI lifeboat The first night was breeze on and many boats chose to seek safe haven and retired.
Both monohull and multihull course records were broken with faster elapsed times set for the next edition. - USATR23
